









Rhode Island College has the distinction of being one of the first public institutions of higher education to establish an Upward Bound Program. The single such project in Rhode Island since its inception in 1966, Upward Bound is designed to generate in low-income, potential first-generation college students the skills and motivation necessary to complete high school and to enter and graduate from a program of post-secondary education.
Viola Davis, a 2008 Academy Award and Golden Glove nominee for her role in the movie Doubt, talks on "The View" about the role the TRIO programs have played in her life. Davis participated in the Upward Bound and Student Support Services programs at Rhode Island College. (

Viola, a member of the Upward Bound Class of '83, and her sister, Deloris Davis Grant Class of '82, founded the Upward Bound Scholarship in 1988 as a means of "giving back to the Program," and the first fundraising event was Viola's One Woman Show- An Actress Prepares!
