Blood Pressure & Diabetes Screening

Date/Time: Wednesday, February 4th from 12:00 - 2:00 PM
Location: Unity Center
In recognition of Black History Month 2009, Health Services and the Unity Center will host a program about health issues affecting the African American community. The entire campus community is invited to participate in the screenings and take advantage of important information provided by the RI Department of Health, Office of Minority Health. This event will take place on February 4th from 12:00 to 2:00 PM in the Unity Center. Director of Health Services, Lynn Wachtel, will be on hand to answer questions.

Newport's Buried History Walking Tour

Date/Time: Sunday, February 8th
Location: Student Union Loop at 11:45 AM
Student Activities sponsored trip to the Newport Historical Society for an African American history walking tour entitled: Newport’s Buried History walking tour. The bus will be leaving the SU Loop at 11:45AM Sunday, February 8th and the tour will start at 1:00pm. The ticket price for RIC students is $5 and the ticket price for non-ric guests is $10. Anyone interested must purchase there ticket at the welcome and info center in the Student Union. Tickets will go on sale by Monday, January 26th.

Mass Media & the African American Experience

A lecture presented by Dr. Jared Ball of Morgan State University. Dr. Ball is an assistant professor of communication studies with research interests including the interaction between colonialism, mass media theory and history as mechanisms of social movements and political organization. Additionally, he is well known as the host of mid-day Jazz & Justice on Washington DC’s WPFW 89.3 FM. Campus wide lecture to be presented - Thursday, February 19, 2009 in Alger Hall Room 110. The Rhode Island College History Department presents “When the Cheering Stops:  Black Rhode Islanders and Professional Negro League Baseball” a look at the history of Negro Baseball in RI and its players.  Lecture and discussion led by department chair, Dr. Robert Cvornyek, with commentary by, Gladys Thomas, wife of notable player and activist the late Charles Thomas. This presentation is open to the public and supported by the Unity Center, African and African American Studies the Adams Library - Tuesday, February 24th from 3:30-5:30 PM in the Fortes Room/Adams Library.

Third Annual Journey to the Motherland

Date/Time: Thursday, February 26th from 7 - Midnight
The RI College student organization, Women of Color, hosts the third annual Journey to the Motherland event on Thursday, February 26th from 7PM until 12 midnight. This year's theme is "Storytelling." The program includes, food, speaker, vendors and music & dancing. Tickets are $8.00 for RI College students, $10.00 for the general public and tables (10) are $70.00 available through the Unity Center.
