Leadership Development Programs

Emerging Leaders Program

The Emerging Leaders Program at Rhode Island College is designed to help students to develop their leadership potential through participation in a series of workshops and experiential learning opportunities. The workshops are organized into six key areas:

Semester One: self-understanding; cultural competency
Semester Two: communication and teamwork; social responsibility
Semester Three: professionalism; mentorship

Outside LinkApplications are now being accepted for the Fall 2009 Emerging Leaders Program. For current Rhode Island College students, submit your application by April 10, 2009 for priority consideration.  If space is available, new students entering RIC in Fall 2009 may be considered for the program, if the application is submited by August 28, 2009.

Leadership Weekend

Dates for the 2010 Leadership Weekend will be announced by the beginning of the Spring 2010 semester.

Leadership Weekend is an annual, off-campus retreat where students participate in a series of interactive and innovative workshops focusing on a variety of interpersonal and teamwork skills.  Highly qualified facilitators lead the training sessions.  Past presenters have included Outside LinkMichael Miller, Outside LinkDoug Cureton, and Outside LinkSharon Whittaker.  Leadership Weekend is a truly memorable experience that can be the defining moment in a student's college career.

Scholarships for Service

 

 Complete 300 hours of community service and receive a $1,000 education award!

Outside LinkScholarships for Service (SFS) is an AmeriCorps Education Award program that engages college students committed to service; these students complete a minimum of 300 hours in exchange for a $1,000 Education Award.  SFS is administered by Rhode Island Campus Compact, through generous financial support from the RI Service Alliance, and involves institutions of higher education throughout the state.  Member campuses in Rhode Island have a deep committment to the value of service in education and to fulfilling their public trust by graduating people who are active participants in civic life.  

Students who successfully complete the program (by serving 300 hours and meeting gneral program requirements) are eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award.  Education Awards can be used to repay qualified student loans, to pay all of part of the cost of attending a qualified institution of higher education, or to pay expenses incurred while participating in approved school-to-work programs.

APPLICATION PROCESS:

  • Submit a copy of your resume and short essay (two page maximum) answering the below prompt to Student Activities in Student Union 408 or e-mail the materials to Marissa Weiss at mweiss@ric.edu by Wednesday, September 23 at 4pm.  The essay prompt is as follows: please describe, in detail, a time in your life when you voluntarily participated in community service.  What was your motivation for participating?  What did you take from this experience?  Why do you think that community service is important?  If you haven't previously participated in community service, why are you interested in service and what do you hope to gain from the experience?
  • You will be contacted on Friday, September 25 about your acceptance to the program.
  • If accepted, you will need to attend a MANDATORY orientation session on Wednesday, September 30 at 12:30pm in Student Union 434.  At this session you will learn the details of participation and complete the necessary paperwork to enroll.  Please note that you must bring a birth certificate, passport, or INS certification to this session.  You will also need to complete a criminal background check; documentation of the background check must be submitted within a week of the orientation.  Please note that students cannot begin counting service hours until after completing all paperwork and submitting proof of citizenship and background check.
  • Along with completing the 300 hours of service and submitting monthly timesheets, participants will attend monthly meetings to reflect on the experience and learn about the significance of service learning.  The meetings will take place on the following Wednesdays at 12:30pm in the Old Alumni House: 10/14, 11/4, 12/9, 2/10, 3/10, and 4/14.

Student Leadership Awards

In an effort to acknowledge the outstanding contributions of Rhode Island College students to improving the lives of others and making a positive impact on society, Student Activities has initiated the Student Leadership Awards program.  Our students serve others in a variety of capacities through their time working at jobs and internships, providing assistance to friends and family members, volunteering with community service organizations, and participating in campus involvement programs.  Their many contributions embody the mission of the College to promote civic engagement and public service, which leads to the enrichment of the entire community.

This award ceremony is intended to recognize students of Rhode Island College who have demonstrated leadership potential both on and off campus.  Student Activities has the privilege of honoring exceptional undergraduate students for their impact as leaders within our College, state, and global communities.  These awards celebrate students who display good character, respect, dignity, inclusiveness, professionalism, and compassion.

Below are the award categories.  To nominate a student for an award, submit the Outside LinkOnline Nomination Form by the end of Feburary 2010.  All nominees and nominators will be invited to attend the recognition ceremony; the exact date, time, and location will be announced in Spring 2010.

Individual Awards

Alan Chile Leadership Excellence
Presented to students who exemplify what it means to be a student leader.  These students are in good academic standing and demonstrate the following qualities:

  • Positive impact through on campus employment, academic internships, or student involvement programs
  • Ability to work with and lead others
  • Positive relationships with and respect from co-workers, peers, faculty, staff, and administrators
  • Successful collaboration with others in a team environment
  • Outstanding leadership characteristics including enthusiasm, self-reliance, problem solving, effective management and organizational skills, courage, honesty, credibility, and ability to inspire others

This award is named in honor of Rhode Island College alumnus Alan Chille.  While at Rhode Island College, Alan managed the Rathskeller College Pub, worked at the Bookstore, and was a leader of Programming.  Alan is currently the General Manager of the Providence Performing Arts Center and serves on the Shinn Study Abroad Committee.

Vital Contribution to the Community
Presented to students who have shown that a community can be transformed through leadership and involvement.  These students are in good academic standing and demonstrate the following qualities:

  • Positive impact through off campus employment or internships, family commitments, volunteer activities, or other programs
  • Strong commitment to improving the lives of others
  • Understanding of the concepts of community building, civic engagement, and public service
  • Positive relationships with and gained respect from members of the community
  • Empathy, compassion, and sincerity in all of their endeavors

Campus Spirit
Presented to students who take pride in and embody the spirit of Rhode Island College and have inspired others to become engaged in the College and its mission.  These students are in good academic standing and demonstrate the following qualities:

  • Support for Rhode Island College programs including major events, as well as club, organization, and sporting events
  • Respect and appreciate the College's mission
  • Passion for necessary change
  • Enthusiasm toward the College and is devoted to the quality of like at RIC
  • Leadership by serving as a role model for their peers
  • Pride in the campus community

Organization Awards

Organization Outreach
Presented to student organizations that have formed successful partnerships with local, national, or international organizatios in an effort to make a positive impact on society.  These organizations are in good standing with Student Community Government, Inc. and Student Activities, and demonstrate the following qualities:

  • Adherence to and promotion of their organizations' mission and values
  • Positive relationships with and respect from partnership organizations
  • Concerted effort to understand and address the specific needs of the community in a respectful, compassionate manner
  • Undersaning of the concepts of community building, civic engagement, and public service.
  • Ambassadorship of Rhode Island College and adherence to its mission
