What is a Resident Assistant?
The position of Resident Assistant at Rhode Island College is a life changing leadership opportunity. Resident Assistants are expected to act as positive role models and maintain the highest level of commitment towards attaining the goals established by the Office of Residential Life and Housing. This position is challenging and rewarding. It calls for leadership, interpersonal skills, appreciation of diversity, and initiative. Training is offered to help build confidence in this new and challenging role. A resident assistant will work as a community developer and an administrator for staff and students in the residence hall. Resident Assistants are expected to recognize the needs of their residents and serve as a liaison between the resident population and the administration.
How do I become a Resident Assistant?
Becoming a resident assistant is a multi-step process. The first step to becoming an RA is the application. Applications are made available January 22, 2013 and are due back by February 13, 2013 to the Office of Residential Life & Housing. Applications are available in the Housing Office as well as the Unity Center & Student Activities. The next part of the application is Group Process on February 16, 2013. Group process is a positive and exciting part of the selection process that serves as an opportunity for the professional staff to observe applicants interacting in a group setting. Applicants will go through a series of activities which will challenge how they work and interact with others on various tasks. The final step of the process is an interview. All interviews will be held between February 18th and March 1st. All applicants can sign up for an interview slot at group process.
What are the requirements for application?
The requirements for application for a resident assistant are as follow:
- Must be a full time student at Rhode Island College with a minimum GPA of 2.5 as of the end of the Fall 2012 semester.
- Must complete at least two full time academic semesters as of May 11, 2013.
- Must demonstrate leadership potential, dedication to and involvement in student development activities at the college.
- Must not have any outstanding financial obligations to the college.
- Cannot be on a judicial probationary status as of the start date of employment as a Resident Assistant.
What is the compensation for Resident Assistants?
Resident assistants are generally contracted for the entire academic year, including training period, and receive:

A taxable credit on the student account equivalent to the cost of room and board.

A stipend of $100 each semester, totaling $200.
