Proteus String Quartet

String Faculty at Rhode Island College

Rhode Island College presents the dazzling Proteus String Quartet.

The Proteus String Quartet is emerging as a dynamic addition to the performing arts in New England. Since its debut concert in December of 2010, the Proteus has presented a diverse repertoire of masterworks, rarities and electrifying showpieces. Audiences in their ever-widening concert venues have enthusiastically welcomed such eclectic fare brought to life with imaginative and impassioned interpretations. All on the music faculty at Rhode Island College, the quartet's members are professionals from different musical worlds who find exciting common ground in chamber music.

John Sumerlin

John Sumerlin, violin, has been on the RIC faculty since 1989. Previously, he was founder of the Harrington String Quartet, (finalist in the Banff International String Quartet Competition), and first violinist with the American, Dallas, Cincinnati, Honolulu, and Santa Fe Opera orchestras. He has appeared in recitals and as soloist with orchestra in the US, Canada, Mexico, and Europe.


Samuel Breene

Samuel Breene, violin, has performed throughout the United States and in Germany, Canada, Israel and Haiti. Breene, who pursues a dual career as a music historian, holds a PhD in musicology from Duke University. He has taught at New York University and the University of Pennsylvania before coming to RIC in 2009. He has been the recipient of a Jacob K. Javits Fellowship, a CLIR Mellon Fellowship and a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship.


Susan Culpo

Susan Culpo, viola, is known to Rhode Islanders as the daughter of Aurora Curran, renowned string teacher in Cranston Public Schools. Culpo plays with the Boston Symphony, Boston Pops, and Boston Pops Esplanade orchestras, and is assistant principal viola with the Rhode Island Philharmonic. With the BSO, she has traveled from Tanglewood to Europe and Asia.


Steve Laven

Steven Laven, cello, appears with the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra, the Rhode Island Philharmonic, Boston Baroque, Boston Symphony and Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra. Laven has held titled positions in the Houston Ballet, Houston Grand Opera and Omaha Symphony Orchestras.
