The dates for MIRIC are from Sunday, July 6 to Saturday, July 12.
Students should try to arrive between 1:00 and 2:00 pm.
Permanently engraved ID Cards will be issued to each student on check-in day and must be worn at all times. If you lose your ID Card you will be required to purchase another one for $1.00. Other charges may be incurred.
Immediately after check-in, between 1:00 and 4:00 pm, all students will audition for chair seating. Auditions will be held in room 198 (band) or room 193 (chorus) of the Nazarian Center for the Performing Arts. Results will be posted before that afternoon's rehearsal. Warm up for auditions in 2nd floor practice rooms of the Nazarian Center.
We will meet in room 198 of the Nazarian Center at 4:00 pm on the first day of the institute to provide information and answer questions. Parents are invited to stay for this meeting if they choose.
All students will have their choice of a morning class in addition to the large and chamber ensembles. Please indicate your choices on the Required Information Form and return it right away. Classes will be filled in the order that forms are received.
All meals will be served in Donovan Dining Center, located north of Weber Hall across College Road. Students have their own electronic meal card for identification. Commuters not on a meal plan and parents may eat in the cafeteria by paying as they go through the serving line. Commuters may also purchase a meal plan which includes lunches and dinners for the week. Purchased meal plans come with specific dollar limits to be determined by June 1. Food purchased beyond these limits for any meal must be paid by the student.
Sunday Pizza Dinner
The Sunday evening meal will be a pizza/movie party for all students. The cost of this is included in tuition for all students.
All students, residents and commuters alike, will eat Saturday lunch at a cookout (cost is included in tuition for all students). Parents, family, and friends are invited to join us for this meal. Cost for guests is $15.00 per person, and should be paid at check-in at the beginning of the week. Please reserve your meals on the enclosed Required Information Form and return it right away.
Bring a padlock of your own. You may choose an instrument locker on Sunday. Keep locker locked at all times. Do not bring valuable items such as jewelry to the camp. All instruments and other items should be kept in the provided locker.
The Campus Police Office is located on the first floor of Browne Hall. It is staffed 24/7. The phone number for Campus Police is 401-456-8201.
All students MUST fill out the enclosed Health Form. Students will not be allowed to check in toMIRIC without a valid Health Form. Parents will be contacted by the Resident Director if any health issues arise during the week. RIC Campus Police will also be called for anyone requiring emergency medical attention.
All belongings, especially instruments and bags, should be plainly marked with your name. Although Rhode Island College will use reasonable effort to protect student property, we are not in any way liable for the loss, theft or damage of any property belonging to students. Rhode Island College does not have insurance coverage on students' property. Students are encouraged to insure their property through a private insurance company.
Percussionists need to bring their own sticks and/or mallets for all instruments (snare drum, timpani, keyboard mallets).
Flute players who would like to audition for piccolo should prepare the audition music on both flute and piccolo.
The Resident Director will plan and supervise social and recreation programs for the campers. Students should furnish their own equipment for individual sports such as tennis. Other recreational activities will include basketball, softball, volleyball, etc. If you have a softball glove, please bring it.
Our rehearsal facilities are air-conditioned quite well -- you may want to have a light sweatshirt if you tend to get cold.
Recordings, Videos, T-Shirts
MIRIC will arrange for recordings of the concert and a group picture. CDs and pictures may be ordered at the concert on Saturday. Cost is $15.00 for each.
Private Lesson Sign-Up
Private lessons are optional, and can be arranged with the individual teacher. Students may choose one to several half-hour lessons during week. Cost for a half-hour lesson is $20.00, and checks should be made out to the individual teacher.
MIRIC will conclude with a concert on Saturday, July 12th at 2:00 pm in Sapinsley Hall in the Nazarian Center for the Performing Arts at Rhode Island College. The concert is free and open to the public. Student chamber ensembles and large ensembles will perform. The camp is concluded at the end of the concert.
Information for Commuters
Attendance will be taken each day at the beginning of the 9:00 am rehearsal. Dismissal each day will be at 9:00 pm. Commuters needing disciplining while waiting for parents may be sent home.
Commuter Meal Options
Commuters should have breakfast before arriving on campus each day. Commuters may purchase a meal plan which includes lunch and dinner for Monday through Friday by checking the appropriate box on the Required Information Form. Otherwise, commuters may bring their meals from home or purchase meals on an individual basis as they go through the line at Donovan Dining Center.
Information for Residents
Students will receive a room assignment and room key upon check-in at 1:00 pm on Sunday. You must check and return the key on Saturday by 3:30 pm or pay a late charge.
If you have a roommate preference, you must call our office (401-456-8205) by July 1st and let our secretary know. We will do our best to accommodate your requests.
Each student residing in the residence halls will be assigned to a Resident Assistant. You should get to know your RA and call upon him/her when you need assistance. In addition, an adult Resident Director will be supervising all students and Resident Assistants and living in Weber Hall. You are expected to cooperate fully with the resident staff at all times.
Keep Your Room Locked at All Times
Do not bring valuable items such as jewelry to the camp. Care for furniture and other hall equipment as if they were your own. You will be required to pay for any damages that occur in your room, or any damage you cause to College property. Use no tacks or tape on walls or furniture. Coin-operated laundry facilities are available in the residence hall. You must furnish your own detergent and fabric softener.
A typical daily schedule begins with breakfast from 7:00 to 8:30 am, and classes and rehearsals beginning at 8:30 (warmup session) and 9:00 am (rehearsal begins). Bring an alarm clock -- there are no wake-up calls! Room check is at 10:00 pm, with lights out at 10:30 pm.
Residence hall telephones will not be in service. Parents are encouraged to call their students via cell phone when necessary, but all cell phones are expected to be turned off when students are in rehearsal or class. In the event of an emergency, parents may call Dr. Franzblau at 401-456-9514 or Campus Police at 401-456-8201 and leave a message for your son/daughter.
Residence Hall Checkout
All students must go through formal residence hall checkout on Saturday morning. The Resident Assistant will help inspect each room for damage and help collect keys. Rooms should be left in a clean and orderly condition, or there will be a charge. You are responsible for returning your room key. Lost keys and/or damaged keys will also be charged to the student.
