About Us

The Child Welfare Institute is a leader and innovator in professional development and systems change.

The Child Welfare Institute believes that professional and organizational change is possible when public and private organizations and community members work together.

On June 6, 2001, Governor Lincoln Almond signed an agreement between the Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth and Families (RIDCYF) and the Rhode Island College School of Social Work (RICSSW), establishing the Rhode Island Child Welfare Institute (CWI). As a result of this agreement, CWI staff co-located within Rhode Island College's School of Social Work. CWI enjoys the partnership and support of the faculty and staff from the RICSSW. CWI staff serve as teaching resources to the RICSSW's undergraduate and graduate social work programs, where they share the message of child welfare practice.

Since its implementation, CWI successfully implemented a six month core pre-service training program for newly hired employees. In addition to its pre-service program, CWI lead the way in intermediate and advanced training for professionals in child welfare and human service systems. Through RI's Child and Family Services Review, the Administration for Children and Families, (ACF) identified CWI as an asset for RI's DCYF and community partners.

CWI continues to utilize training as an opportunity to engage critical constituents in dialogue that will help to inform ongoing change for Rhode Island's children, youth, and families and the professionals who work with them.
