Paolo Soleri, born in Italy in 1919, is a visionary architect and leader in the use of solar, renewable, and sustainable energies. His teachings and practice are now being realized globally under the rubric of arcology—the integration of architecture and ecology. Soleri's work has been exhibited worldwide, and he has received fellowships from the Graham and Guggenheim Foundations as well as numerous international awards. Soleri is a 2006 recipient of a Cooper-Hewitt Design Award for lifetime achievement.

During October, models and drawings by Paolo Soleri are on exhibit at Bannister Gallery. Along with the exhibition, Soleri is lecturing on the universal benefi ts of arcology on October 24 at 7:00 p.m. in the Rhode Island School of Design Auditiorium.

The 2006 October Series also involves symposia, panels, performances, and discussions, which focus on the present fuel crisis and the need to develop alternative energy sources that are independent of oil, gas, and coal.

Opening Reception: October 5, 6:00 p.m., with a lecture by Theodore C. Landsmark, president of Boston Architectural College, at 5:00 p.m. in the gallery.
