A Recent Acquisition Exhibition
December 9 - January 8, 2010
Opening reception Wednesday, December 9th, 5-8pm
This exhibition presents a sampling of photographs recently
acquired by Rhode Island College from the Andy Warhol
Foundation's Legacy Program.
The photographs are Polaroid and silver-gelatin black-and-white images of celebrities. Some of the more famous subjects include Bianca Jagger, Pia Zadora, Liza Minnelli, Martin Scorsese, John Travolta, and fashion designer Giorgio Armani, along with several pointed and revealing images of the painter James Wyeth.
There are no posed shots here but rather a moment in repose or a chat with an unidentified person as in the John Travolta image. The photos reveal the idiosyncratic nature of his subjects, thus permitting the viewer to have a shared moment with the artist.
Through these works Warhol established his own sense of the documentary genre so prevalent in modernist art trends in the last century. He thus continued to push his work, striving to reinvigorate and reinvent himself as an innovator and protagonist in the art world.
This show is curated by gallery director James Montford. There will be a walk-through and gallery talk by the director the night of the reception.
