Personal and Professional Development Series for RIC Alumni

These free on-campus workshops are offered exclusively to Rhode Island College graduates in partnership with the Rhode Island College Alumni Association and the Career Development Center.

Navigate Your Career with Clarity and Confidence!
Often, when transitioning, whether it is our first job out of college, changes within our current job or transitioning to a new job, we are very quickly overwhelmed with new and different routines and demands. Transition is all about change and we can navigate change with intention and direction. As RIC alumni transition into employment or through job changes and all that comes with that, your ability to apply tools that support clear choices based on priorities will position you for faster and greater success. This two-part series will introduce you to some of these tools and the important aspects of navigating transition with clarity and confidence.  The series is designed so that participants can select to participate in some or all of the sessions.

Session 1 – Make Clear Choices and Focus Your Energy on Actions that Matter!
April 26, 2017
5:30-7:30 p.m., Donovan Dining Center

Description:
Upon entering a new or different job experience, we are often bombarded with making new choices.  Some simple choices could be what you wear and how you get to work.  Other more complex choices could be how you react to challenges at work.  Other even more complex choices could be how you spend your valuable time.   So often we spend our time just reacting to or trying to fit into what is in front of us, obsessing over a particular issue or worrying about some situation that is uncertain.  This is a confusing way to navigate your choices.

We are also so much a culture of “doing”. We jump in to doing something without giving a great deal of thought to our intention. We know that we want to get that thing done but we often do not ask the question of whether this thing we are doing is having the impact that we want to have. Operating in this fashion often leaves us overworked, exhausted and depleted of energy. This session focuses on how you can use values and priorities to make clear and aligned choices. It is particularly important to gain clarity on what we value because our values are a compass, particularly when we occasionally lose our way. When we are making choices in alignment with our priorities we bring more passion and enthusiasm to our work.

Objectives:

  • Learn and practice the application of tools to identify values and priorities for outcomes and impact as a result of transition
  • Learn and practice the application of tools to make choices that are aligned to values and priorities.
  • Learn and practice the application of tools to discern which tasks and actions truly make an impact.
  • Develop 1-2 commitments for action following this workshop

Session 2 – Expand Your Possibilities
May 25, 2017
5:30-7:30 p.m., Donovan Dining Center

Description:
Paul Coelho has a great quote says: “People are capable, at any time in their lives, of doing what they dream of.”  Too often we think of dreaming as frivolous. And yet, we dream all the time. We think about the places we want to go, the experiences we want to have, the way we want to be remembered, and the impact we want to have; just to name a few. But we too have often separated those dreams from today’s reality of my life. They don’t have to be. Consider that they are the catalysts to seeing our lives and opportunities outside of the box we are in now.

In this session we explore how you can propel yourself towards your desired career experiences. When we desire change, we too often dive straight into defining specific tactics and goals.  While tactics and goals do create movement, the risk with starting there is that you may too quickly narrow possibilities of impact and perhaps end up stuck or with results completely different from what you intended.  At AWE, we believe in starting with visions of desired experiences and outcomes.  When you are clear about how your desired experience truly feels and looks, identifying the clear goals that will propel you towards your vision become much simpler. We then explore how you can make clearer choices and take actions today that propel you towards advancing your career goals.

Objectives:

  • Learn and practice the application of tools to identify visions of desired experiences and how to translate them into actionable tactics and goals.
  • Learn how to make choices and take actions todays to propel you towards advancement.
  • Develop 1-2 commitments for action following this workshop
